Roger Miller 1King of the RoadSinger/Songwriter Roger Miller grew up dirt poor, picking cotton in his aunt and uncles farm. Commenting on the farm outside Erick, Oklahoma where he grew up he joked "the town was so small the town drunk had to take turns." After an army stint beginning at 17 years old, which he laughs about, "My education was Korea, Clash of 52", Roger headed to Nashville. Working at the Andrew Jackson Hotel as a bellhop while he pursued his dream, he became known as the "Singing Bellhop" because he would sing a song to anyone who would listen on the way up or down. It took many years of writing songs and lines that other singers performed before Roger Miller finally got a chance to shine with his hit single "Dang Me" which crossed the lines between country and pop music. He received 11 Grammy's and produced such novelty songs as "King of the Road", "Engine, Engine No. 9", "England Swings" and "My Uncle Used to Love Me But She Died". Roger Miller 1 Shot 1968 |
