Eva DonleavyVegas Visitor 7/2/76IN THE NEWS July 2, 1976 - Of course being America's bicentennial has brought salutes to liberty scenes to shows up and down the strip. The Dunes "Casino de Paris" is produced by a Frenchman, Frederick Apcar, who took his studies for American citizenship to heart and gives us a history of this country nightly. The gigantic extravaganza dramatizes the Ceremonial Indian dances, Lafayette coming down the Mississippi, the Independence Ball, the Wild, Wild West and the Gold Rush to the ending of WWII with the entire cast of 100 on stage. Bet you didn't know that Jose Ferrer plucked Red Buttons out of a Minsky's burlesque show in 1941 to head up his comedy "The Admiral Had a Wife", about shenanigans of Naval officers at Pearl Harbor. The tryouts for the play were completed on Dec 6 but the Japanese attack on the 7th sank the play along with the Pacific fleet. Red Buttons still went on to win an Oscar for "Sayonara" and made it to the Thunderbird Hotel this week with singer Dick Roman. Eva Donleavy |
